PayDay Super and SMSFs: Three Important Steps to Prepare

From 1 July 2026, Australia’s new PayDay Super system will change how employers make Superannuation Guarantee (SG) contributions. Instead of paying contributions quarterly, employers will generally need to ensure contributions reach their employees’ superannuation funds within seven business days of payday, subject to applicable rules and exceptions.

The change is designed to help superannuation contributions enter members’ retirement savings sooner, potentially allowing more time for investment growth and compounding returns.

For Self-Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) trustees who receive employer contributions from unrelated employers, preparing for these changes is an important step towards ensuring contributions can be processed efficiently.

Here are three key areas SMSF trustees should review ahead of PayDay Super.

1. Confirm Your SMSF Member Details with the ATO

Ensure the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has the correct details for your SMSF and that the relevant member information is up to date.

Accurate member and fund details are important for SuperStream, the electronic system used to process superannuation contributions and related information. If the required information cannot be verified, an employer’s contribution may be delayed or rejected.

Trustees should confirm that their SMSF details and member records are correctly registered and that their employer has the information needed to make contributions to the fund.

2. Check Your Electronic Service Address (ESA)

An Electronic Service Address (ESA) enables your SMSF to receive the electronic information associated with superannuation contributions and certain rollovers.

Trustees should confirm that their SMSF has an active ESA through an appropriate provider and that the details supplied to the employer or payroll department are correct.

Keeping these details current can help reduce processing issues and support the timely receipt of employer contributions under the new arrangements.

3. Confirm Your SMSF Bank Account Can Receive Payments

Your SMSF’s bank account is another important consideration when preparing for PayDay Super.

Trustees should contact their financial institution to confirm that the fund’s nominated bank account can receive the relevant electronic payments and that there are no restrictions that could affect the receipt of employer contributions.

It is also worth reviewing the bank account details provided to the employer to ensure they match the SMSF’s current arrangements.

What Should SMSF Trustees Do Next?

PayDay Super is an important change to Australia’s superannuation system, and taking the time to review your fund’s administrative arrangements can help reduce the risk of unnecessary delays.

SMSF trustees should consider checking their ATO registration details, confirming their ESA arrangements and speaking with their bank about the fund’s payment capabilities. Where appropriate, trustees may also wish to confirm the requirements with their SMSF administrator or accountant.

Funds that do not expect to receive further employer contributions may have different preparation needs. However, trustees should still consider any electronic requirements relevant to their fund’s ongoing operations, including rollovers.
